I really wanted to love this book, but it fell extremely short of my expectations. My daughter asked for a "veggie cook book for kids" on her Christmas list. I searched through Amazon and this was the only plant-based whole food diet cookbook for kids that came up on my search. I put it in my cart and was thinking about buying it, but I wanted to find a blog or something with some sample recipes to try them out before I committed to buying such an expensive book. I was also wary of the "only three ingredients" recipes, which in my experience indicates reliance on convenience food and mixes. I hadn't decided yet to get it, buy my husband went ahead and bought everything in the cart without consulting me first!I paged through it when I got it, and I could tell it wasn't everything I wanted. It seemed rather sparse on recipes (only 45 recipes total). I would have returned it right then, but I bought it as a gift and didn't have anything to replace it with in time for Christmas. After my daughter got it, she looked through it but didn't see anything that really caught her interest. I looked through it more carefully after that and was even more disappointed.
Here is the breakdown of recipes:
7 recipes for smoothies, juices, and milk
4 breakfast recipes (granola, muesli, pancakes, and bread)
6 recipes for cookies and snacks
8 recipes for dips and spreads
5 recipes for soup
8 recipes for simple meals
9 recipes for desserts
The word "recipe" is kind of stretching it for some of these. One of the recipes is for peanut butter spread (peanuts + water in the blender). Most of the ingredients used are quite expensive, with the majority calling for main ingredients of nuts and dried fruit. Several call for the meat of a young thai coconut (not easy to find in Alaska). There are two or three recipes that use Food For Life: Ezekiel sprouted grain cereal as an ingredient. Her "Sprouted Granola" recipe is just the Ezekiel cereal mixed with walnuts in the food processor. That's it. I can't afford that cereal, which is why we are doing our own cooking.
The one recipe my daughter wanted to try was Sushi Balls, which calls for a brown rice cake (I usually don't buy puffed grains, I think it would have been better with just plain brown rice). It also called for "1/2 package of roasted seaweed", no mention of the size of the package. Roasted seaweed comes in all sizes of packages, and apparently it wasn't the size we had, because it was way too much! This wasn't the only recipe that seems to be lacking in details, the pancake recipe (which uses sparkling water, another ingredient I am not fond of) has instructions how to mix the batter, and then it ends. No instructions on how to cook the pancakes.
The most infuriating part of the book was that three of her recipes call for "meal starters" made from black beans, lentils, or peas. I searched all through the book trying to find out what on earth these were, assuming that there would be a recipe for these meal starters. I finally found a small note in the introduction that directed me to her website, where I found that the starters were soaked, cooked, and dried legumes mixed with spices, and that you could purchase them from her site for $10/pound plus shipping. I'm sorry, I love beans, but I won't pay $10 a pound for them. For the $30 purchase price, you would think that she would at least include instructions to make the meal starters in her book!
I was glad that this book exists because my daughter loves to cook and she wanted to be able to make some healthy vegan food on her own, but the flaws and lack of good recipes in this book really don't add up to the purchase price. If if had been 5-6 dollars, I would have felt less cheated. If you are looking for a great plant-based book for kids to use in the kitchen, I would suggest Plant Powered Families by Dreena Burton. I got that book for myself and my daughter (age 8) prefers that one when she cooks. It has full-color photos on each page that all my children love to look through, and all the recipes are kid-friendly. And you get a lot more recipes for your money. Plus, she has a website with recipes that you can try before you buy the book.

The Power Of Three Vegan Cookbook PlantBased Cookbook for Kids Tanja Johnston 9783943766288 Books Reviews
l've been very interested in starting a plant based diet for our family and Tanja Johnston's "The Power of Three" has been great resource in adjusting our diet and eating habits slowly. The introduction of "why a plant based diet" and more importantly her explanation of how our nutritional needs are met in this fashion is extremely thorough, yet simple in approach, which I appreciate. I've always understood that a plant based diet works, now I really understand the logistics.
The recipes are simple, extremely time efficient (which is most important as a Mommy), but best of all YUMMY! The sure test was winning my 4 year old son over. I wish I'd always known preparing meals for my family could be so nutritious and effortless. I'm hoping she comes out with another cook book soon, to expand my repertoire of recipes, but her guidelines for creating your own recipes are so easy. I've never been that creative in the kitchen, but she's inspired me, and I'm sure I will be creating my own masterpieces soon!
This book gets a five out of five because the recipes are easy, healthy, and very tasty. You don't have to be a vegan to enjoy the recipes. Be sure to read the explanations of how and why this diet works. The information about soaking nuts and grains is especially important. I've made many of these recipes with my kids (6 and 8), and they love them! The gorgeous photos get them excited, they enjoy being part of the easy preparation process, and there are NO leftovers. For health reasons, I've had to change my diet, excluding most grains, meat, and dairy. This cookbook gives me fabulous, tasty options. I'm so glad to know there are other people out there who eat the way I do!
Not worth the price and as one of the reviewers said, I could have gotten better recipes on pinterest. Disappointed!sigh!
I appreciate the philosophy behind this book but the recipes are not written very well.
Amazing and simple!
This is a fantastic book full of healthy, yet simple recipes that everyone can make. If you are considering a plant based diet, this is a great book to introduce you to simple yet delicious recipes. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, this book will be a great addition to your cookbook library. The kids will love it too!
Wasn't thrilled. Very limited information for the price. Can find better recipes on Pinterest.
