He understood why she did it. She had lost her own baby - one conceived by the unwanted advances of a sexual predator - and hated thinking of them out there in the cemetery, alone and cold. She had to bring them into the warm. She had to give them the life they'd otherwise never live. It was her mission. But with each new doll brought home, her yearning for a living child of her own continued to grow. Yes, he knew why she did it but - even so - he wasn't able to stand by her and he knew she was going to get a lot worse before she got better. But how do you help someone who doesn't want to be helped? And how do you turn your back on your own sister?

From Matt Shaw - the author behind the black cover books - comes a terrifying new story of lost love and mental illness. Expect twists and turns as he takes you on a dark journey into the depths of a broken mind.

Let me say something right off the bat here: "Dolls" is not one of those "nice" books. If you're looking for a read that will make you happy, and leave you with a nice taste of joy or hope in your mouth, you should probably look elsewhere. Keep in mind I'm not saying that AGAINST the book, but be forewarned: "Dolls" opens up with a sad scenario, and it only gets worse and worse from there.

"Dolls" follows the story of Mark and Zoe, who grew up with divorced parents. Their father has died, and their mom stays with her new man, Gavin. The story jumps between two points in time: Zoe and Mark as children, where Gavin starts to sexually abuse Zoe; Zoe and Mark as adults, where Zoe is staying with Mark, and sneaks out at night to the graveyard to...well, if you've read the book description, you can probably imagine. Although the book description sounds like it gives every detail of what's going on, there are a few twists in the story, especially near the end, which gives you a kick-in-the-butt reveal.

One strange technique author Matt Shaw used was switching between first and third person. We'll start in third person, then switch to first person with another character, then third person again, then first, then maybe first again, etc. I haven't read Mr. Shaw's other books, so I don't know if he always does this, or maybe he was like Stephen King with "Christine" and he wrote himself into a narrative corner. It caught me off guard at first, but it didn't detract too much from the story, so eventually (like with "Christine") I just learned to cope with it.

Like I said at the beginning of this review, this story isn't going to make you feel pleasant, and it doesn't offer much in the way of hope at the end. That being said, is it well written, and worthy of your time? Sure. If you're already a Matt Shaw fan (and I can tell he has many, and clearly deservedly so), then by all means dig in. If you're new, then go ahead and try it out as well.

DOLLS an extreme horror eBook Matt Shaw Reviews

Does not live up to it's name. Left so much lacking! Story, characters.. follow through. No shock value or "disturbing" storyline. Nice twist at the end.. but not finished well. Very disappointed. Short too. Read in a couple hours
I have read a few books by Matt Shaw. 3 out 5 were good reads with gore and explicit scenes. This was not one of my favorites. I gave it 3 stars because it wasn't until the end of the book that the last shoe dropped and it was a quick little twist that was not that great. I'm huge on gore, and blood, and disgusting situations .... this one did not satisfy that need.
I can't even come up with an appropriate way to express what I feel about this book. It was very odd, and completely messed up--and not in a good way. There really were no good redeeming qualities about it, and it was not something I would care to read again. Definitely not what I was expecting.
Matt Shaw is, hands down, my favorite extreme horror writer. His books aren't for everyone, however, so heed the warnings on the covers before purchasing! As for me, the more gruesome the better. "Dolls," although somewhat tame, is still great! A quick read with a good twist! Loved it!
I thought this was a terrible terrible book. The thought of any of that really happening makes me absolutely disgusted
Somehow I think if you write stories like this, there must be something wrong with you.
Matt Shaw also writes books that I do love, and I have given them 5 stars 'Evil Little Things'. But the last 2 books are so cruel, I think in these times with the ISIS you should not write these sort of books 'The Farm'. Dolls was not so extreme like the farm, so that's the 3 stars for. But I still think there is something wrong in his head.
Such a sad tale showing the darkness of humanity. Tragedy hits this family over and over, leaving one mental mess after another. Hold on tight, there are plenty of amazing twists and turns with the crazy classic Shaw ending! Well done, highly recommended to all fans of modern horror.
