This was fun from beggining to end. I am actually waiting for this author's next installment. It was as funny as it gets and then suddenly it was very tough, serious and real. I think that thought the situation is unbelievable there is a reality to the characters that gives this story the strength to make a difference. I read hundreds of books, litterally, a good 80% regency and this one called my attention. It is not a clean regency, what the girl wants is sex so if you are not into it don't get this book. Otherwise, this is really a good short and fun read. And it has the coolest cat to boot!

Here's the thing with historical romance. You have to get certain things right, and if you can't, then you probably shouldn't bother. One such thing is language and slang. No one, and I mean NO ONE in Regency England ever had an exchange like this

I'm in no way a pedant, but COME ON. Anyone who has ever read a well written historical romance or any classical books will agree that this stuff grates. I realize the author of this book is one of many who regularly insert American slang into their supposedly English historical novels, but that is no excuse.

Another thing is the way people talk to each other in this book. No servant in Regency England could expect to talk back at her mistress the way the heroine's servants did and expect to keep their position for another minute. And no mistress would plaintively ask her maid for a favor (would you mind watching my brother's cat while l'm away? SERIOUSLY?) Honestly, today we have Downton Abbey and Upstairs / Downstairs. Perhaps watching those series might provide some clues as to how servant / master relationships were conducted in the past.

I won't go into detail about the cat (again, seriously?) Or the fact that a gently bred young lady would never just show up at the door of a man she barely knows and demand he have sex with her. Or discuss her weight with him. Dear god. And look, I'll suspend my disbelief anytime for good writing, but there was no mutual history there, no build up, no flirtation, NOTHING that would explain that suddenly this man madly desires her, and she him. The characters were one dimensional and not particularly interesting, let alone compelling. I'll be honest I quit half way through. I just couldn't make myself care.

This is definitely not the worst historical romance I've ever read, and actually, the author shows some promise in her writing, despite the above mentioned flaws. But to anyone who likes basic period and language accuracy, interesting plot lines, and compelling characters with more than one dimension to them, will be better off with Courtney Milan, Meredith Duran, or Julie Anne Long, just to name a few.
I really enjoyed the first 70% of this novel. I liked the humor and the witty banter between the H/h. It didn't bother me that some (a lot, actually) of the language was too modern to fit the era. I just enjoyed the humor. I especially enjoyed the antics of the evil cat who lived to shred and destroy anything in his path. Obviously the author has been watching Jackson Galaxy's 'My Cat From Hell' on Saturdays. The enjoyment of the book started downhill at the 70% mark and took a real nosedive at the end. The sappy, crappy declaration by the hero was totally cringe-worthy and totally out of character. For me, the first 70% of the book was 4 1/2 stars, the next 10% was 3 stars and the ending was 1 star...finally giving it a 3 star rating.
Ludicrous. Gorgeous "bluestocking" who believes she's "plain" pursues an emotionally unavailable war hero for a one-night stand as she has no chance of being married. My sense is that the heroine is a bluestocking just because she can read, because she doesn't seem especially literate or well-educated to me. She seems simple minded. She's ignored at every social gathering because her overprotective brother has made it plain that she's off-limits to men. She decides that she's being ignored because she's so unattractive and forgettable. She's apparently so simple minded that she hasn't looked in a mirror and discovered for herself how stunningly beautiful she really is. Anyway, she foists herself upon the poor man and they're immediately snowbound (how convenient) and she works on his last nerve until he finally deflowers her and then tells her what a ghastly man he really is, as he allowed prisoners of war to be tortured to death. They split up. He thinks she thinks he's horrible. She thinks he doesn't love her. But then he shows up at the opera she's attending, stops the performance, declares his love for all to see, and brings her down on the stage to dance with him. Yeah. Right. Like I said, ludicrous. The heroine is annoying. I kept waiting for the hero to pack her - and her evil cat, which was meant to be comic relief, but was just another ridiculous annoyance - out into the storm and let her walk home, and good riddance. But of course, she's SO beautiful and SO irresistible that he MUST have her. Two stars because the writer uses good grammar.
