Omar the Immortal Europa Joseph Robert Lewis 9781475156904 Books
In Omar the Immortal author Joseph Robert Lewis returns us to the world he created where Europe never left the last ice age Northern Africa is rainy and temperate and home to mighty empires. It is a fully imagined world that spans continents that are both familiar and strange. The technology of this alternate earth is steam powered and engaging in its depth. There is the ago old schism between religion and science to contend with though it is far different religion and very different science. The existence of the human soul is a simple fact. Ghosts can be found everywhere including hoards of ghosts of the long dead that haunt the glaciers or Europa.
Enter Omar. Over 4000 years old he is as immortal as the title suggests. He does not age, physical wounds heal almost instantly, and he is immune to poisons. He is in possession of a sword made of fabled sun-steel, a metal that glows red hot and can capture the souls of those it slays. His sword contains thousands of souls and he relies on these spirits to assist him in every aspect of his life from dueling to medicine to entertainment.
Omar wants to visit the fabled land of Ysland, modern day Iceland, where it is rumored that the glaciers do not cover the land and the island is warm and glowing. He believes Ysland is the source of the sun-steel and it is where he can find people who know all its secrets including the secret of his own immortality.
Omar bribes his way onto a scientific airship exploring and mapping the frozen British islands. But trouble also comes along as one by one the scientists of the expedition die mysteriously. It isn't long before Omar is accused of poising his shipmates.
This is a very good and very well written story. My only complaint is that it was too short. The various characters of Omar the Immortal begged to be fleshed out and developed. As well as Omar's reasons for wanting to make the dangerous trek to a mythical island in a sea of ice need development. I hungered to meet some of the souls trapped in his sword instead of the slight hints of them Lewis offers.
I also feel the story ends too abruptly. The end suddenly appears. I feel it could have been developed better.
Joseph Robert Lewis has several books set in this ice age steampunk world and I look forward ot reading more of them.

Omar the Immortal Europa Joseph Robert Lewis 9781475156904 Books Reviews
I actually quite enjoyed this novella! I found Omar to be an intriguing character and I am looking forward to discovering what the future holds for him. I would recommend this to fans of steampunk & fantasy.
I received this book free from LibraryThing in return for an honest review.
I found this story enjoyable. I really like the main character. I idea behind the story is intrigues me.
Omar is a warrior, who has a mystical sword. He has found a way to live forever. The sword holds the souls of all who have been slain by it, & they are under the power of the bearer of the sword.
This short story has Omar looking for the Ysland where the sun- steel, which the sword is made of, is originally from.
The Europa trilogy was my introduction to Joseph Robert Lewis and --- Wow! --- what a great introduction it was! I am half way through the last book and just wanted to say to all those out there considering this trilogy, do not underestimate this first book. Yes, it is only 53 pages long and while it may seem to end abruptly, it also sets the foundation for the rest of the trilogy and introduces us to one of the most pivotal characters --- Omar the Immortal (although I get the distinct impression that Omar may be a carry-over from another trilogy). So, while I still wish this book could've been longer, I have nothing else to complain about. It is still a very well told story by an obviously talented author.
