Heart of Obsidian Psy/Changelings Nalini Singh Books
This is the book I have been waiting for. After the first two books in this excellent series, I was convinced that Singh had managed to come up with a killer template for the rest of the series: passionate romance in the midst of intense political games and violent clashes between ideologies set in a unique and sprawling fantasy world. However, the majority of the rest of the books in the series haven't fully done all that for me though.Especially the recent ones just seem focused on the romance aspect between two lesser characters and haven't really seemed to push the overarching plot to the series. The thing about this series is though, I think the question of who the ghost is, and what's going to happen to the twin Net Minds, and whether a full on war is going to explode--are all more interesting than the romance of the week. Singh has simply created far too a wonderful world for these important matters to be pushed to the background. Therefore, I was hopeful that both we would soon get a book about Kaleb (as he is inexplicably one of my favorite characters even though it's been intimated many times that he's a sociopathic killer) as well as a book that would really push this series into a high gear regarding the series plots.
This book changes everything.
From the first page, you know big things are going to happen. Kaleb as a Councilor is simply too big a major player in the Psy world for his actions not to have massive consequences. We do find out who the ghost is, and without completely spoiling it for everyone, it's not wholly unexpected. In fact, it makes more sense than if she had picked another character-still it wasn't the big surprise that I was kind of hoping it would be. I think what made this book really different for me was that Kaleb, Nikita and Anthony finally band together beyond reactionary stuff. They make things happen as opposed to react together to things happening. On that note, the entire Psy world changes by the end of the book. The overarching plot is kicked into overdrive, and finally the big major changes that you hoped for actually happen.
Also, the romance furthers and pushes the plot forward as opposed to halting it in the middle. However, there were times that that their interactions got a little repetitive ("she's broken" etc.) It was otherwise well done though, with palpable tension between the two. I think it was very important for Kaleb to have someone that could kind of match up against him instead of being a pushover, and I think Singh managed that very well.
I think something brilliant about Singh's writing that I don't see often mentioned in reviews, is that her world building isn't just exceptional for a fantasy series--it's also a powerful commentary on many of the social issues being debated in real life. Not to read too much into the series, but coming from the Deep South as well as a massive history nerd, perhaps I'm more aware of situations where sometimes one group of people tries to isolate themselves or weed out the "unpure" ones, or those who just don't belong. I think this series is remarkable in being able to avoid the preachy aspects of a "we are all equal" agenda, but is still able to show through an engaging plot that a world full of diverse groups of people living harmoniously is to the benefit of all.
In conclusion, I don't want want to turn this review into an essay, but I do want to make it clear that this book is one of the best not only within the series, but within the genre. While many series that get up to the 8-12 books range, tend to peter out idea wise towards the end--this book is the opposite of that. Singh simply nails it.

Heart of Obsidian Psy/Changelings Nalini Singh Books Reviews
Kaleb Krycheck, scariest villain and most mysterious character in the Psy-Changeling series, is vivisected--heart and soul exposed--in book 12. If you've been waiting for his story as long as I have, it will exceed all of your expectations.
Not for a day, not for a second, had he forgotten his search, forgotten what they'd taken from him. The preceding books elude to his hidden agenda, his preoccupation with...something. His search is over on the very first page and, holy Silence, the intrigue never lets up.
This installment is a revelation of telekinetic wonder. It embodies the idea that a kicka55 outcome vindicates the overlong narrative it takes to get there. The characters and their motives are mind-muddling complex, but your sympathy for them will run as absolute and deep as the PsyNet.
Book 12 accentuates this unique series as a visionary fusion of futuristic technology, philosophy, romance and tantalizing action. The sex is scorching, the tone dark and somber. The ending clots the air with the tension of looming revolution, raising the hairs on your spine and knotting your muscles in anticipation for the next book. Change has arrived and it's thrilling to know this series is far from over.
All I can say is Hell Yeah, Ms. Singh! Bring it on!
I love reading about tortured, conflicted characters who live in a state of grey. So Kaleb's story was always one I wanted. What he faced as a child was every bit as bad as one would have thought. That the man is sane at all is a testament to his will. The same for the fact that he can control his considerable gifts. Through in the fact that he is a rebel and an epic love story and you have one hell of a book. Kaleb's match is every bit as magical as he is and the pairing perfect. Not only is this an epic romance but the plot is a culmination of what has been building for books and was perfectly done. A must read.
The first thing I need to say is This is the 12th book of the series (not including novellas, short stories, and free e-stories), and in order to enjoy and experience everything this book has to offer, start with the first book of the series, Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings, Book 1). Read each of her Psy/Changling books in order because each new book builds upon the back of the previous book(s) to create a world you could believe actually exists filled with characters you come to know and love...and love to hate.
I have to say that it is really hard to give a detailed review of Heart of Obsidian because so much happens in this book that ties in with the previous books it's hard not to have spoilers, and I absolutely DO NOT want to spoil this book for anybody. What I can say is that this is Kaleb Krychek's story and what a story it is. In previous books we've been teased about who Kaleb is. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? Is he like his former mentor? Is he a solid follower of Silence or is he a true sociopath? I was dying to know who Kaleb was and this book absolutely delivered on telling us who he is and why.
The other part of this book, as with all of her previous Psy/Changling books, we are thrust into the escalating conflict of the three races. I really love how each book includes characters from past books so we can catch up with them like old friends. Oh, we also get to learn a few secrets, like who the Ghost is.
I see on Nalini Singh's website that there are to be at least two more books after this one and I cannot wait!
