I swore off Ghost Hunter books after reading the one that took place in Wales (book 6). Too much Gil. I didn't even look at book 7 when I got the Amazon tickler. I lost track of Victoria Laurie for a few years, then picked back up the Psychic Eye books a few weeks ago. After I ran out of those I looked at Ghost Hunter again. I read the reviews for Book 7 and was very glad I hadn't caved and bought it - still too much Gil. The reviews for this book were better and the comments of others made me give book 8 of Ghost Hunters another shot. I really liked it. Gil is still Gil, but really no histrionics at all. I liked how M.J.'s relationships with Heath and Steven were tied up. Unlike other commenters I didn't feel it was over written. M.J.'s internal voice was going through a compare/contrast/reconciliation process I found very real (all neat and tidy for a book, but still a reasonable process). I didn't figure out the ending early in the book, which was great. I gave it 4 stars because I reserve my 5 stars for really, really good books. This was excellent for a quick read. I'm happy I read it. I'll never read book 7. I'm going to read book 9. For those you that look for grammatical and spelling errors, there weren't any. Penguin Books are well edited, this was no exception.

The book was enjoyable. I liked the paranormal detective stuff especially in this series. This was an interesting one since the plot contained a complicated mystery. Nicely done!

By the way, love their psychic crew even Gillie who offsets the other two rather nicely. Gil maybe too stereotypical to some readers but I love it. Each of the characters (Em,Heath,and Gil) play off each other well (the mind,body and soul ). They play off my fantasy of having a well oiled crew in a strange world of paranormal activity.
I. Must admit, it took me longer than usual to read this book, because I only read it during the day. I would get too creeped out to read it at night! Yes, I do believe in the supernatural and this bool gave me he heebie-geebies. This is wonderfully written and very suspenseful, I had to keep reading last night because I had to know what happened next! It was great to have MjJ, Heath, and Gilley back on American soil and to learn more about MJ's dad which we'll learn more about in the next book!
I really enjoyed this book. It definitely sent a shiver up my spine. I was reading it alone in the house and had to keep looking over my shoulder. Every time I heard the house creaking, it made me jump. But the story line itself was interesting. I love all the characters and how they react with one another. I love that each character has a back story that makes them who they are and helps to explain their behaviors, just like a real person. I would definitely recommend this book and this author as this is the 8th book in the series.
Could not put this book down. M. J. Holliday finds herself helping out her Ex boyfriend Steve. Steve's fiancee's Brother Luke is having trouble sleeping and a personality change. With the help of current boyfriend Heath and best friend Gilley M. J. sets up surveillance cameras to watch Luke while he sleeps to try and see what is making him him feel uneasy and lose sleep. What happens they are not prepared for. Luke walks out of the house and disappears for hours and when he returns he is covered with blood.
I truly enjoyed this book and it's story line.
MJ gets an unexpected call from her ex-boyfriend, Steven, asking to meet with him and his new fiancée, Courtney. They are hoping that her ghost hunting experience can help Courtney's brother, Luke, who appears to be haunted. In the process of determining the source of Luke's haunting, MJ and Heath become involved with one of the most deadly spirits they have ever encountered...one that may be responsible for the murders of several women. Can MJ solve this case and help save Luke, or will this case destroy her own soul? This series keeps getting better and this one was one of the scariest yet. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
The only bad thing about the latest Ghost Hunter Mystery is that at the end it gives an excerpt of the next book in the series which is going to come out IN A YEAR!!! That's a long wait!
I think this is one of the best of the MJ series. I found the story fast paced, interesting, full of twists, and for the first time reading this series...scary. This one freaked me out with its story of mind controlling ghosts and murder. I don't want to say too much and give away the plot twists. I was glad to see all the regular characters back for more adventure. What I really like about this series is that MJ is not the typical female detective in distress. I get so frustrated with the usual pattern of "it's too dangerous for you, don't go....I know it's dangerous but I'm going to do the exact opposite of what I should and not protect myself or tell anyone where I am...Oh no, I'm in danger, who could have seen that coming". MJ is smart and brave but also uses common sense. When in danger and told by Heath to run, she runs. Good girl!
It's great to see the character of Gilley so happy in his relationship and I hope they do end up marrying as hinted a few times.
Ms. Laurie's introduction and explanation about her personal inspiration for MJ's doctor ex boyfriend was heartbreaking and made the story that much more meaningful.
Can't wait for the next one in the series!!
I am sad to say that this is probably the last of the Ghost Hunter Mysteries I will be buying. I have enjoyed Victoria Laurie's book but, unfortunately, they are all the same. It took me a week to finish just a few chapters when it would normally just take two days to finish the whole book. It just seems to be a repeat of all the other books, just with a few different characters thrown in. This makes me very sad. I do recommend her earlier books. I just see a pattern that the author is stuck in. I would love to see something new and exciting. Perhaps one day I will be able to finish reading the book, I'm just a little bored right now.
