Tis the Season to Be Sinful Adrienne Basso 9781420111910 Books

I always enjoy Ms. Basso's novels. They are delightful & charming & capture a true sense of love between two people.
I wish the epilogues were more complete with definitive endings, such as the birth of the new baby (babies - twins would be a nice touch) & perhaps the expectation of one for Olivia & George.
I like a romantic novels to have epilogues fast-forwarded where all important loose ends are caught up - similar to solving all the questions in a good mystery.
Thanks for an enjoyable read.
Sincerely,
Ms. Alvie Hoffmann

Tis the Season to Be Sinful Adrienne Basso 9781420111910 Books Reviews

There's a lovely, old-fashioned feel to the prose in Tis the Season to be Sinful. It's one of the few books I've read recently that feels thoroughly steeped in the period. But, unfortunately, the conflict is all over the place, the characters somewhat shallow, and the holiday elements seem more engaging than the romance.

My problems with the book center mainly around the lack of focus to the story. It seems like it's just not sure which problem it wants to explore about our hero (our heroine seems marginalized throughout.) Do we explore the working class values of the American? His inability to join in with Christmas festivities? His absence from the new home he married to get for months on end? Or his strained non-relationship with his wife's children? There are so many different mini-conflicts in this book that all are dealt with in an unsatisfying and superficial way.

While this book did its job, it's not something I'll be reading again. I loved the holiday elements, but for some reason, the romance was just...ok. Since I did manage to read it in only a couple of sittings, I'm giving it higher marks than it might sound like it deserves.

gift for daughter, I didn't read
I enjoyed reading this book. I loved the details about the various old holiday traditions. I enjoy when historical romance novels also give you a nice perspective into the life and many aspects of a specific era. So then it's not just romance, it feels real. And, of course, those times were actually real, thus the past becomes alive. It almost makes you feel as though you are a part of the time and place if only for a moment. AND, even nicer was the fac t that I read this book only a week before Christmas - it was almost like having two Christmases - one back then and one today!
It was okay, a marriage of convenience turned into a love match. We know early on the hero's secret fear and why he does not want to get to close to the heroine, why he wants to keep it like a pleasant business arrangement. We know the heroine's reasons for marriage and also her desire to make something more of the marriage. It is very obvious from the start which one of her children will resist their mother's re-marriage. It is all pleasant and predictable. I found the ending either rushed or awkward. I am not writer so I don't know what Adrienne Basso could have changed to make be me experience the ending. It was as if both hero and heroine had a epiphany, first the heroine, then the hero as well as his relationship to her children was being solved by a big meanie. And from not wanting to have anything to do with being a step parent to claiming the children as his over a few pages.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, got severely annoyed when I was interrupted but I doubt I will re-read it.
